Addison

Addison history

Addison, Illinois is situated 20 miles west of Chicago, nestled in the crook where the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) and Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355) intersect. The surrounding expressways make travel to and from Addison a cinch and folks who work in the city have a fairly straightforward commute to downtown. It is home to roughly 36,000 residents and covers about 9.5 square miles, making it one of the bigger Chicago suburbs.

Addison was first settled in the 1830s and was incorporated as a village in 1839. The area grew steadily in size and population during that time, but the addition of passenger transportation by way of the Chicago and Pacific railroad in 1873 really established Addison as a budding 19th century town. Construction of schools and colleges set the tone for the village's commitment to education early on. The first school was a log cabin that opened its doors in 1837. Today there are several public educational facilities servicing the area, including a branch of DeVry University that occupies an 110,000-square-foot state-of-the-art complex.
